Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has emphatically ruled out joining former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s camp and his Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) ahead of the 2027 general elections, asserting her independence, principle, and strategic political vision.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony of the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) – Kirinyaga Central Campus on Friday, December 5, 2025, Governor Waiguru underscored her commitment to governance and principled leadership over opportunistic political alignments.

Waiguru’s decision comes amid intense speculation over political realignments in the Mt Kenya region, where Gachagua has actively campaigned for Central Kenya unity in a bid to challenge President William Ruto’s re-election.

The Governor was clear that she could not align with Gachagua following his impeachment in October 2024, a move that constitutionally blocked him from vying for elective positions under Kenya’s 2010 Constitution.

“I am not going to Wamunyoro; do not wait for me there,” Waiguru stated firmly. “For those following me around, I tell them to take it slow because the election is far. People are saying I have one year left. At least I am working. If you do not have a seat anywhere, where will that person take us to?”

Waiguru continued, emphasizing that her political choices are rooted in clarity and foresight: “It is not even that he can vie; the constitution does not allow him. It is not me, it is the constitution. At the same time, I cannot seek a third term as Kirinyaga Governor. So, for a person who does not know where he is headed, why should he be followed?”

Her stance reflects a strategic approach to politics, where leadership is guided by principle, legal frameworks, and the broader interests of her supporters, rather than transient alliances or populist pressure.

Gachagua has previously accused Waiguru, Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, and other Mt Kenya leaders aligned with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) of being tools used by President Ruto to divide the region politically ahead of 2027.

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, however, has publicly defended both Waiguru and Mbarire, praising them for their distinguished service, patriotism, and exemplary leadership in navigating political pressures.

“Governors Anne Waiguru and Cecily Mbarire have done our country proud as exemplary and successful political leaders,” Kindiki stated. “The two have variously held senior positions in public administration and politics, outpacing the naive, arrogant novices trying to bully them into submission.”

Waiguru’s decision to chart her own course underscores her reputation as a principled leader who prioritizes governance, accountability, and long-term strategy over short-term political gain.

Her approach also signals to supporters that thoughtful, measured political engagement is essential, even in a region known for intense electoral competition and shifting allegiances.

By refusing to be drawn into Gachagua’s camp, Waiguru demonstrates that political influence comes not from following trends but from vision, credibility, and effective leadership.

Her message to her supporters is clear: unity, strategic patience, and principled alignment will guide their political decisions rather than reactive alignment with uncertain forces.

Waiguru’s leadership style combines governance, strategy, and foresight, marking her as one of Mt Kenya’s most influential and respected political figures.

Observers note that her stance not only protects her political integrity but also positions her as a key voice in the region ahead of 2027, capable of shaping debate and guiding followers with clarity.

Her grounding of the KMTC–Kirinyaga Central Campus project further reinforces her focus on delivering tangible development outcomes, signaling that her political engagement is always anchored in public service.

In a region rife with speculation and maneuvering, Waiguru’s clarity of purpose and refusal to follow populist currents highlight her as a strategic thinker who balances principle with political reality.

Her firm rejection of the Wamunyoro bandwagon also sends a message that leadership is about foresight and accountability, not short-term allegiances or opportunistic gains.

As the 2027 elections approach, Waiguru’s calculated, principled stance will continue to shape her narrative, influence her supporters, and reinforce her reputation as a strategist who acts with both integrity and vision.
