Kenya is set for a remarkable sporting moment as the World Under-21 Taekwondo Championships kick off at the Kasarani Indoor Arena. The inaugural global event has drawn extraordinary interest, attracting 77 countries — including South Korea, the United States, Israel, Russia, South Africa, Egypt, Côte d’Ivoire and Uganda — and more than 450 elite athletes.
Team Kenya, consisting of 16 highly motivated players, has been in intensive training at the Kenya Academy of Sports and is primed to shine on home soil. Their preparation has been bolstered by interactions with Olympic champions, boosting confidence and raising expectations for a strong medal performance.
World Taekwondo officials and international delegations began arriving in Nairobi over the weekend, signalling heightened anticipation and positioning Kenya as an emerging powerhouse for hosting top-tier global sporting competitions.
Kenya Taekwondo Federation President Major (Rtd) Suleiman Sumba lauded the overwhelming turnout and reaffirmed Kenya’s readiness.
“The large number of countries and athletes coming for the championships underscores the global confidence in Kenya’s ability to host events of this magnitude. We are honoured to welcome the world to Nairobi for this historic championship,” he said.
He noted that all logistical, technical and security plans have been finalized in close collaboration with ARCrayon Communications — the federation’s communications, partnerships and resource mobilisation partner — as well as government agencies and World Taekwondo officials.
“We are fully prepared to deliver a world-class event that meets international standards,” he added.
Major (Rtd) Sumba expressed optimism about Team Kenya’s prospects, pointing to their rigorous training regime and the electrifying support they expect from home fans.
“Our athletes are highly motivated. We expect them to deliver an exceptional performance and bring home an impressive medal haul,” he said.
With the world’s attention on Kasarani, Kenya stands ready to deliver a historic, high-calibre championship that will elevate the nation’s profile on the global sports stage.
